Dude, Dope, Gnarly!

Dude, Dope, Gnarly!

For today’s video I am going to feature some of the most common slang words used by SURFERS!

California is known by its surf culture, it is a sport that many families have passed over the years and generations (in my case, my boyfriend is a surfer, his brother is a professional surfer, their uncles and cousins are surfers, and their dad was a famous surfer in the 70’s and 80’s).

As a matter of fact, there are over 20 surf boards in our garage, they all belong to my beloved boyfriend.
As you see, I am surrounded by surfers most of the time, and this won’t be the only video about surfer’s vocabulary (there are a lot more words).

1.      DUDE: A dude is any friend (male or female, it has no gender when you use with friends), any man or any  acquaintance

-        DUDE I called you last night to check if you wanted to go grab some waves today
-        That DUDE is the tallest in my class
-        Those DUDES have no clue of how to wax a surf board
-        The DUDE can surf very well
-        Hey DUDE! It’s nice to see you again!

2.      DOPE: it can be something fun, extraordinary, surprising or a way to exaggerate. It is also a gangster word for drugs or crack in ghetto neighborhoods.

-        The new car presented by Tesla is so DOPE!
-        DUDE that is such a DOPE wave!
-        Last weekend was DOPE, we had such a great time!
-        Gangsters want the money to buy more DOPE.

3.      GNARLY: Cool, awesome, extraordinary, over the top, huge or even an awkward situation.

-        Those tacos are so GNARLY! They are big, tasty and cheap!
-        Mickey’s ex showed up in her wedding, DUDE that was so GNARLY! (awkward)
-        Waves in Indonesia are GNARLY, they are fun but they can kill you!

Welcome to Daily English Vibes!

My Name is Yicel, I am a proud Colombian that has been traveling around for the last 5 years, I work remotely in digital advertising, my job allows me the freedom to enjoy the outdoors, engage in different activities and pretty much have a happy and awesome life.  During my journey and the time I've spent in the US I have improved my English skills, and I have learnt a lot about American Culture, overall Californian culture.  At this point of my life I feel like I can share some of the knowledge and fun stuff I've come across, I plan on keeping things simple, I don't have a specific goal by doing this, I just want to make it enjoyable for those who read me and watch my videos, of course I want to be part of a learning process that takes time and love and became one of my biggest passions during my teenager years: ENGLISH!
