To Pick up, To Pick on Someone, To Be Picky

For today’s video I want to tell you about some more expressions and vocabulary related to the past 3 videos of this week.

The verb PICK means different things, it can be the action of taking something with your hands and put it on a more elevated position (Pick up your clothes, pick up your shoes, pick up/ answer the phone), and it can also be when you go get someone or something from a place (normally in your car or vehicle) “Please pick me up at the airport”, “please pick up the dress at the dry cleaning”. You can even pick up speed (accelerate).

NOTE: Picking up someone also means that someone is flirting with you or someone likes you!
“Last night I PICKED UP the most beautiful girl at the bar, we danced all night long and she even gave me her phone number!”

“Will is always PICKING UP the waitresses from every bar he goes to, he is such a player!”

Laura always PICKS UP the smartest guys, they always help her study for exams”

To pick is also choose or select something from a variety of options “pick an answer”, “pick a restaurant”, “pick a color”, “pick a size for your pants” etc. Besides that there are more uses for the word pick:

To pick on someone

-Picking on someone bugging someone, joke around, or make fun of somebody

Scenario 1: Zack’s sister Emily is very ticklish and Zack loves to PICK ON HER so he tickles her when they are watching tv.

Emily laughing: Zach! Stop it! Why do you have to PICK ON ME when we are watching tv? You know I am very ticklish and I hate it when you tickle me!

Scenario 2: Adam has a zit on the tip of his nose, his girlfriend Madie makes fun of him and tells him he has a door bell on the tip of his nose.

Adam gets annoyed of his girlfriend making fun of him: Maddie, would you like to be PICKED ON for having a stupid zit on the tip of your nose? It wouldn’t feel nice, right? Stop being such a bully!

(Notice how I used a passive voice TO BE PICKED ON)

-Being picky when someone is particular about something, being demanding, having very high standards about a particular thing.

Scenario 1: Ben invited Lisa for dinner, but she didn’t like the Italian restaurant he picked for their date, Lisa is picky and she wanted to go to a sushi restaurant that recently opened so she gave Ben a hard time about the restaurant he picked.

Ben tells his best friend the next day: I took Lisa to a nice restaurant I picked, and she didn’t like it, it is such a shame I always pick picky girls.

Scenario 2: Christy and Jen are best friends, they like to go shopping but Jen is very picky about shoes, she tries on every shoe on the store to end up buying the first one she tried on!

Christy: Jen, I love you but you are so picky! It takes forever to go buy shoes with you, next time you will have to go by yourself!
