Stand, Bear and Support
Today I am going to show you how to use 3 different verbs that have some similarity, two of them we saw in the first video (STAND AND BEAR) the third one is SUPPORT.
Let’s get started with the verb STAND
To stand is to be on your feet “Margaret was standing in the middle of the room”, “I stand on the edge of the stairs and look down”
STAND UP Means getting up from where we are, but it is also the act of SUPPORTING an idea, a minority or a cause “ I stand up for the victims in Syria”, “I stand up for breast cancer prevention”.
“STAND UP COMEDIES GET THAT NAME BECAUSE COMEDIANTS ARE STANDING ON THEIR FEET THE ENTIRE TIME OF THEIR PERFORMANCE”
To STAND also means to tolerate or to endure a situation or a person (it is normally used when there is negativity or doubt).
- I can’t STAND cold weather - We doubt we can STAND her attitude much longer - Jeremy can’t STAND the fact Alicia left him - Our dog can’t STAND fireworks - Many people can’t STAND watching the news - They tried to STAND the loud music, but they ended up leaving.
To BEAR has a similar meaning, to bear is basically to resist something (like weight), and TO BEAR WITH means to tolerate a person or situation.
- The horse can’t BEAR so much weight - All bridges must BEAR the weight of cars and trucks - I can’t BEAR suspense movies - Most men have a hard time BEARING WITH their mothers - in law - Please BEAR WITH me, I can’t speak loudly, my throat hurts
Finally the verb SUPPORT (DIFFERENT FROM “SOPORTAR/AGUANTAR” IN SPANISH)
To SUPPORT is to help or be part a cause, to sponsor, it can also be to provide (with money or supplies), to be based on, another meaning is to allow.
To use as provide:
- Karen’s dad SUPPORTS her, he pays for school tuition, rent and her car.
To use as based on
- The idea is SUPPORTED ON many studies and researches.
- Most people in Los Angeles SUPPORT the Lakers basketball team on the NBA - Artists like singers and actors SUPPORT victims of natural disasters - People SUPPORTED the cause and donated money and clothes. - Californians voted to SUPPORT the use of medical cannabis
To use SUPPORT as allow:
- Android devices SUPPORT all apps from Google’s Play store - IPhone only SUPPORTS apps from the Apple store
